Disc Golf is Officially in North Bay

The Rotary Club of North Bay has, as of May 31, 2004 installed an 18 hole disc golf course on Jack Pine Hill. The fastest growing sport in North America, disc golf, is a game with potential to engage every age in a fun, free, fitness activity.

The Jack Pine Hill course will be one of the best in Ontario, ultimately able to host local and provincial events. The Rotary Club is particularly focused on the potential for the younger generation to get involved and have a recreational activity that is engaging, both physically and mentally, and provides an alternative to other more sedentary pursuits.

Our biggest challenge is to bring players to the course to experience the sport. We are looking to members of the North Bay Ultimate League to introduce this activity to family and friends. We would appreciate your support by trying the course yourself, and then encouraging others to join you in a session.

The typical ultimate disc is sufficient to enjoy the game; official disc golf discs are in town, but we are not sure as yet through whom you can purchase them. Contact Don at wheelerd@ontera.net using the heading “Disc Golf Sales” for current information.

Course Description

The course starts from behind Vincent Massey School on Laurentian Ski Hill. All holes have full signage indicating distances, par, obstacles, next tee direction, etc. and the first 11 holes have rubber tee pads installed (remainder to be installed Fall 05). Although dense vegetation can be a problem on some holes during heavy growth seasons, most holes are playable throughout the spring summer and fall seasons. Efforts are underway to ensure fairway maintenance is improved. If you are interested in volunteering to help with course maintenance please e-mail the address below

Course scorecards and maps are expected to be available by mid summer 2005 at City Hall, the YMCA, and several commercial outlets. Discs are for sale at the YMCA and major sports outlets. Rental discs are to be available at Hill Variety on Airport Road.

To join an e-mail listing of interested players or to volunteer to help ensure the future of disc golf in North Bay, please contact wheelerd@ontera.net.

1 - 6 start on the west side just below the school, loop down and hard right over to the far west run (Maples?) for #2 and #3 and back up to the top, still to the west of the main chair for #5 and #6.

7 tees from the top straight down under the chairlift and 8 & 9 come back up parallel to, but slightly east of the chair nearly to the top.

10 tees on the east side of the main run down to the hole on east side, over to the west side, (11) and 12 tees from there to the washout well below the tube run. From there, 13 leads back uphill toward the tube run and to 14 on the bottom east of the tube run.

Backtrack to the 15th tee on the road to the east of the building (beginners run?) and proceed up the road to 16th tee near the shacks. 17 goes back downhill diagonally across the tube hill; 18 goes diagonally back (brutally) up to the top of the beginners hill.
